General Mills offers cash to
schools in exchange for box tops from participating products, such as
cereals, fruit snacks and yogurts. Monies received are deposited into a
fund which is used to supplement recess supplies and equipment. The
Campbell Soup Company offers points for labels, which can be traded for
items in a catalog provided by the company. Volunteers in these programs
are responsible for promoting the programs within the school and
creating incentives for students to participate. Box tops and labels are
collected by the volunteers on a monthly basis and are counted and
bundled for redemption. Periodically,
box tops are forwarded to the companies. |

| Destination

Destination
Imagination is a national program sponsored by IBM Corporation. It
promotes creative thinking and problem solving for K-8 students outside
the classroom. Teams are divided into grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8, and are
eligible to compete in state and national competitions. Students are
required to work as a team to solve a problem, which could range from an
engineering problem to a public performance. Adults are needed as
assistant coaches after school. This program begins in the fall and ends
in the spring and meets weekly. There is a regional competition in
March. Oak Ridge School has had many teams which have gone on to compete
at the next level! More information about this program is sent home with
the students. See destinationimagination.org
for details. This program
will NOT run without a chairperson and several volunteers. |

Our
school is beautiful, but a little loving care around the grounds to put
the “finishing touches” during the change of seasons would add so
much! If you like to garden
or landscape then this is the place for you!
The front garden in the 2007-08 school year is being generously
cared for by Classic Landscaping & Design.

This is
the perfect job for those who want to help, but who may be limited to
projects that can be done at home. If you like to bake, this is the job
for you! Volunteers are
needed to bake for various functions such as Career Day, special events,
etc. The people who provide the baked goods for these functions are the
people who make the program a success.

The
Holiday Concert and Festival offers families and students an opportunity
to celebrate the winter holidays with music, entertainment, and

| Library |
Christine
Johnson-Staub 428-3612 |
The library at
the Oak Ridge School is a terrific resource center and a very busy
place! Our librarian does a
great job, but there is an impossible amount of work for one person to
handle. The library relies on volunteers to maintain its smooth
operation for our children. Volunteers are needed for shelving books,
making sure books are in correct order, straightening shelves, and check
books in and out. Volunteers can also help with book repairs, clerical
tasks and special projects. Think about volunteering for your child’s
library class. |
| Little

Kristine

predetermined day. A chairperson publicizes the program, orders the
pizza from Little Caesars, and coordinates the distribution. |
| Math

Volunteers are
needed to plan and/or help staff the Family Math and Science Nights for
the 3rd and 5th grades. The special nights are held in the beginning of
March. A math/science background is not necessary--just a willingness to
help make math and science fun. Complete
information packages are available for both grades.
Great experiments, their “grocery lists” and how-to’s make
this and exciting opportunity for new chairpeople! |

first Friday of each month) Volunteers are needed to photocopy the
newsletter each month.

| Nurse's
Office |
Mary
Cox |
The school nurse
needs volunteers to help with Kindergarten Screening, vision and hearing
tests for all grades, and to administer weekly fluoride mouth rinse to
all second grade students. She also needs occasional volunteers for
physicals and other projects. Training will be offered. |
| Photocopying |
|
Volunteers are
needed on an occasional basis to help with quick projects for the office
or for teachers. Duties include photocopying, stuffing envelopes,
laminating, or making items for projects in the classroom |
| Reading
for Fun (K-2) |
Deana
Crowther
and
Martina Mehl |
Volunteers are
needed to read to small groups of students in Grades K-2.
Small groups meet for a half hour weekly. A classroom is divided into groups of 5 or 6 students. The
volunteer meets with one group each week presenting a book and following
it up with a brief, simple craft or activity. The same lesson is
repeated with each group until the entire class has been through one
rotation. Then another
lesson is created and presented to the groups.
This is a fun program that has been very well received by the
children and is a great way to expose students to a variety of children’s
literature. Most classrooms have several volunteers, so each parent is
responsible for only 2 or 3 lessons per year. |
| Reflections |
Jennifer
Tickell 420-2868 |
Reflections
is national PTA program. It
is a recognition and achievement program for the Arts.
It highlights the importance of arts and literature in education
by offering students an opportunity to showcase their talents. THIS YEAR’S
PROGRAM IS IN JEOPARDY. Visit
www.masspta.org for more
information. MassPTA must
have volunteers to run this program at the state level in order for
Massachusetts students to be able to participate in this valuable
program. If the program runs, it will kick off with the Target Stores
sponsored “Start the Art” week of October 8-12, 2007 All K-8’s
students are eligible to participate.
All participants receive recognition and school winners will
participate in an awards ceremony. Winners go to state and possibly
national PTA Reflections contests. Volunteers are needed to spread the
word of the event, help prepare the submissions and to do some
photocopying. This event runs October through January. |

| Spirit
& Sharing

Mary

The Spirit and
Sharing Program is designed to enhance character education by promoting
school spirit and community awareness. A bi-monthly theme reinforces a
character-building concept and is connected to a local community need.
The last Friday of every month is "Spirit Day",
where students wear their school colors of blue and white, and
classrooms in each grade compete for a spirit banner. Grades K-4 will
receive prizes for participation. Students are also encouraged to make
donations of their time, talents, or items in support of a charitable
cause. Occasional assemblies bring grades together to further encourage
a sense of school pride and to highlight current outreach efforts.
Volunteers for this program are needed to serve as
coordinators for each of the participating grades - currently, K-5. A
sharing coordinator is also needed to collect and distribute student
donations to the recipient charities. This is a wonderful way to get
involved with the Oak Ridge School and to help nurture our children's
sense of commitment to their community. |

Most parents would
admit that they would like their children to watch less TV. During
TV-free week, the PTA does it's part to find more creative ways for
children to spend their leisure time. Participation is voluntary, but
the children who chose to take this challenge have a chance to win books
and prizes. Volunteers are needed for the one-week period, to help log
the progress of the children. This event takes place in April. |
